Grade K

Main Level Objectives

Expanding from language acquisition to learning English Language Arts. All four core English skills: listening, speaking, reading, and writing are practiced throughout this Grade and expand into grammar, comprehension, and intermediate reading.

Speaking

  • Practicing everyday vocabulary
  • Answering in short sentences
  • Practicing vocabulary and phonics with the call-and-response method

Listening

  • Repeating after the teacher to build phonics sounds

Writing

  • Writing letters in capital and lowercase
  • Writing chains of one-syllable short vowel words using consonant digraphs 'ch', 'sh', 'th', 'qu,' and 'ng'
  • Organizing simple sentences

Vocabulary

  • Learning the numbers 1-10
  • Learning lines, shapes, and colors, as well as tricky words and various reading-based vocabulary

Grammar

  • Practicing the use of prepositions

Reading

  • Reading grade level decodables
  • Recognizing one-syllable short vowels

Comprehension

  • Developing the ability to ask and answer questions about the text read that require literal answers, open-ended questions, hypothetical questions

Grade 1

Students expand their comprehension by focusing on vowel digraphs, spelling patterns, advanced tricky words, 2 syllable words, and continuing decoding texts and building comprehension. Students also focus on comprehension skills with learning the writing process.

Speaking

  • Practicing everyday vocabulary
  • Answering in short sentences
  • Practicing longer responses and expressing thoughts

Writing

  • Being able to copy and/or write capital and lowercase letters, as well as complete sentences
  • Exploring the writing process by planning and writing a narrative writing/ book report from draft to final copy that includes: title, characters, plot details, temporal words to signal order, closure statement
  • Planning and writing an opinion writing, include: introduction of topic/book; opinion statement, reasons for the opinion, closure statement

Vocabulary

  • Continuing to learn tricky words and reading-based vocabulary.

Grammar

  • Becoming able to identify common nouns, punctuation, verbs (present and past tense), capitalization, -affixes (-er, -est), root words, syllables, adjectives, commas, types of sentences, and prepositions

Reading

  • Reading grade level decodables
  • Recognizing specific spelling patterns within reading

Comprehension

  • Asking and answering questions about a text that require literal answers, open-ended questions, hypothetical questions, as well as comparing and contrasting characters or events
  • Identifying fiction story elements (characters, setting, plot)
  • Identifying nonfiction/informational text features, main idea and details

Grade 2

Students read and break down long texts and paragraphs to focus on spelling patterns, complex tricky words, and summarizing stories as they learn how to point out important details. Students continue to work on their writing skills and implementing complex vocabulary words and beginning to create structure.

  • Practicing everyday vocabulary
  • Practicing longer responses and expressing thoughts

Writing

  • Becoming able to write detailed complete sentences
  • Learning the writing process, including identifying and using parts of a paragraph in an opinion piece, by constructing a topic sentence, supporting details, and a concluding statement
  • Planning, drafting, editing, and publishing writing to develop and strengthen skills

Vocabulary

  • Continuing to learn tricky words and reading-based vocabulary

Grammar

  • Developing the ability to identify and use common and proper nouns, irregular plural nouns, punctuation, regular and irregular verbs (present and past tense), capitalization, adverbs, long and short vowel spellings, syllables, adjectives, types of sentences, prepositions and inconsistent but common spelling patterns

Reading

  • Reading grade level decodables

Comprehension

  • Making predictions prior to reading and then comparing the actual outcomes to predictions
  • Asking and answering questions to demonstrate understanding of the story referring explicitly to the text as the basis for the answers
  • Determining the main idea of the story and recounting the key details as well as explaining how they support the main idea
  • Explaining ideas and understanding in relation to the different topics in the text.
  • Describing characters in the story (e.g., traits, motivations) and explaining how their actions contribute to the sequence of events
  • Describing images and how they contribute to what is conveyed by the words in the text
  • Summarizing texts

Grade 3

In Grade 3, students expand the types of text they read. Students read fiction, non-fiction, tales, and myths and continue to expand their comprehension skills. By breaking down different types of text, students learn how to apply their comprehension skills for various scenarios, and continue to use complex vocabulary to express thoughts and ideas.

  • Practicing everyday vocabulary
  • Practicing longer responses and expressing thoughts

Writing

  • Building the ability to write detailed complete sentences
  • Expanding their understanding of the writing process including identifying and using parts of a paragraph in an opinion piece, by constructing a topic sentence, supporting details, and a concluding statement
  • Planning, drafting, editing, and publishing writing to develop and strengthen skills

Vocabulary

  • Determining the meaning of general and academic specific words when certain prefixes or suffixes are added to the root word

Grammar

  • Developing the ability to use linking words, conjunctions, and phrases (e.g., because) to connect ideas within categories of information
  • Recognizing nouns, abstract nouns (e.g., love, hate, anger, honesty), regular and irregular verbs, adjectives, coordinating and subordinating conjunctions (e.g., and)
  • Identifying subjects and predicates in sentences
  • Recognizing simple, compound, and complex sentences
  • Spelling regular and irregular nouns

Grade 4

Grade 4 utilizes all previously learned skills to the maximum. Students continue to read and discuss long and complex stories, write texts, and express complex thoughts and ideas using the vocabulary they have learned throughout this grade.

  • Practicing everyday vocabulary
  • Practicing longer responses and expressing thoughts

Writing

  • Developing the ability to write an informative/explanatory text that examines a topic and provides ideas and information clearly
  • Organizing clear and coherent sentences/paragraphs in which the development and organization are appropriate to the task, purpose, and audience

Vocabulary

  • Identifying or clarifying the meaning of unknown and multiple-meaning words and phrases based on Grade 4 reading and content, choosing flexibly from a range of strategies
  • Determining the meaning of general academic and domain-specific words or phrases in a text relevant to a Grade 4 topic or subject area.

Grammar

  • Demonstrating a command of the conventions of standard English grammar and usage when writing or speaking.

Reading

  • Read grade level text fluently

Comprehension

  • Identifying main ideas and details of a text and answering literal and critical thinking questions
  • Describing the overall structure (e.g., concepts, chronology, comparison, cause/effect, problem or solution of events, ideas, or information in a text or part of a text.
  • Explaining events, procedures, ideas, or concepts in a historical text, including what happened and why, based on specific information in the text.
  • Engaging effectively in a discussion on the topics and texts, building on ideas and expressing their own clearly.
