Origami Science: Earthquakes

Combine the hands-on fun of origami with the wonder of learning about Earth science in this unique four-part group course. While making their own origami models, students will learn about the tectonic plates that cover the Earth's surface and how these plates interact to produce earthquakes. Students will go onto talk about the different types of earthquakes and how scientist measure these ground-shaking events. Lastly, students will learn about the environmental and ecological impacts of earthquakes, and will further discuss how tectonic plates and earthquakes have shaped many of the landforms we see today.

Origami Science: Earthquakes Course Breakdown

What are tectonic plates? How have these plates shaped the world we live in? Why do earthquakes happen? How do we measure earthquakes? Are there some places that are more likely to experience earthquakes than other places? What is the biggest earthquake that could happen? How have earthquakes impacted us?

In this course, students will get to dive deep into the world of plate tectonics and earthquakes, including their roles in shaping our planet, their ecological and environmental impact, and why it is vital to understand them.

Here is a breakdown of each of the lessons in this course!

Lesson 1: Intro to Plate Tectonics

Did you know that the Earth once consisted of just one giant continent surrounded by one giant ocean? Woah! In our first lesson, we'll learn about tectonic plates and how these massive puzzle pieces of the Earth's crust shaped the world we know today. We'll also model how tectonic plates can interact with each other to cause a variety of geological effects.

Lesson 2: Intro to Earthquakes
In our second class, we will learn all about earthquakes. We'll start with discussing exactly what earthquakes are, and then delve into some new vocabulary to help us talk about earthquakes effectively. We'll also get to model an earthquake, from the perspective of underground.

Lesson 3: Seismic Waves
Not all earthquakes are the same! We'll learn exactly how earthquakes can differ, and how we measure these geological phenomenon effectively. We will learn about the different waves that travel through the Earth, and will talk about which of these waves is most dangerous. We'll wrap up by modelling a city and finding out what happens to it during an earthquake.

Lesson 4: Impact
We’re not done yet! For our last class, we’ll explore how we quantify earthquakes by magnitude or intensity. Did you know that the biggest recorded earthquake was a magnitude 9.5 and lasted for 10 minutes? That's a lot of shaking! We'll discuss lots of famous earthquakes in history and how they have affected our lives. Lastly, we'll learn how to be safe during and after an earthquake.
