Lesson Overview

In each lesson, students will study one well-known graffiti artist amongst peers, examine artwork and take virtual gallery tours. Students will also participate in fun quizzes, interactive games, and exciting activities inside their GSA coursebook. Learners will finish out each lesson using new techniques to make amazing artwork!

Art Program Course Kit

This course kit includes a special GSA Art Program coursebook based on the course you select. Workbooks are filled with fun facts, extra activities, and amazing pictures! The art kit consists of 85 pieces and has everything you need to be an artist!

• Each student will receive the Art Program Coursebook and a wooden art kit.
• All course kits will be shipped to students who enroll in this course.
• Course kits arrive approximately 7-10 days before the course starts.

Students will explore the various types of graffiti such as tags, stencils, posters, and much more! Students will study famous graffiti artist Cornbread, view examples of his artwork, play exciting interactive graffiti games, and participate in fun learning activities in the GSA Art coursebook. Applying their self-expression skills, students will use oil pastels to make their names in graffiti letters with inspiration from Cornbread.

In lesson 2, students will look at another aspect of graffiti. Students will examine and discuss a popular artist with a unique graffiti style; Keith Haring. Students will view examples of his vibrant artwork, take a virtual gallery tour and participate in fun learning activities inside the GSA art coursebook. To finish out the lesson, students will utilize creative thinking skills to paint an acrylic Keith Haring inspired masterpiece!

Students will examine and discuss the mysterious graffiti artist Banksy in lesson 3. Students will view his popular artwork, play a fun game drawing, view exciting graffiti videos, and participate in learning activities inside the GSA art coursebook! At the end of the lesson, students will produce a custom watercolor artwork inspired by Banksy!

Students will focus on the eye-catching street style of graffiti artist Lady Pink in lesson 4, view examples of her artwork, refer to their GSA art coursebooks and take a quiz to see how much they know about graffiti! Applying inspiration from Lady Pink, students will create a vibrant watercolor pencil graffiti art flower! Learners will finish out the graffiti course viewing art perspective, graffiti artists, new skills acquired, and the importance of art in our lives.

Core Skills

There are numerous benefits of children creating art, from problem-solving abilities to fine and gross motor skills. Art promotes creativity, encourages neural connections, sharpens visual learning, and helps to build language development. Making or talking about art provides young learners with opportunities to learn new vocabulary for art elements such as colors, shapes, materials, tools, and actions. Students will learn the following core skills in our GSA Art Program:

• Speaking Skills- learn new vocabulary, answer questions and engage in classroom discussions; For example: “I am using the smaller brush.” “My favorite artist is Monet.”

• Utilize Creativity and Self Expression- create art that represents a thought or memory and is based on exploration

• Problem Solving - apply hands-on practice of skills in reasoning and understanding. How do I make this? How can I draw this? What colors can I make when I mix two different ones together?

• Perspective- consider a situation from a different point of view and put yourself in the other person's position to imagine what you would feel, think, or do. Students will learn about and apply perspective when looking at famous artworks, artists' lives, or examining and discussing other students' artwork.

What should my student prepare before class?

• Students should prepare their workspace before class
• While it is optional for parents/guardians to supervise their child, it is highly recommended in case of spills.

Does my student need additional materials?

• Clean workspace with access to their screen.
• Paper or old sheet to place under art activity.
• Water cup for rinsing brushes when the lesson uses paint.
• Rag or paper towel to clean up any spills.
